Cambridge, UK, 1 September, 2023: [“For Immediate Release”]
Virothera Ltd, a Cambridge-based biotech startup developing novel gene immunotherapeutic technologies, has appointed new CFO David Wright, a senior biotech finance executive, previously Director Finance, Transformation and Operational Excellence at Amgen Europe.
CEO and BD Director Drs Ursula Gompels and Peter Hotten welcome the seasoned professional to the Board at an exciting stage in Virothera’s progress as they transition towards clinical evaluation of their candidates in infectious disease and oncology.
CFO David Wright, FCA, was at biotech pioneer Amgen for fifteen years holding increasingly senior Director roles in Finance and Sales & Marketing Effectiveness. David’s expertise also includes managing M&A within the tech sector and private equity fund investments for the British Coal Pension schemes, among the largest in the UK. He holds an MA in mathematics and natural sciences from University of Cambridge and qualified as a Chartered Accountant with PricewaterhouseCoopers. David brings broad international experience to this new role.
This key appointment strengthens the Virothera Board, as the company moves to product scaling following regulatory engagement. Virothera’s technologies are based on years of study of virus-human genetics by the CEO Professor Founder.
CEO Ursula Gompels said, ‘We are honoured to have this expert new appointment join us on the next stage of our journey as we expand our candidate pipeline and approach the clinic. This appointment brings early on from big Pharma, essential clinical financial and commercial expertise to accelerate our development’. Virothera thanks former CFO Michael Martin, Investment Banker, from our founding team who transitions to our Advisory Board.
New CFO David Wright added, ‘I feel very privileged to be joining Virothera at such an exciting time. With its proprietary technologies that are applicable across a range of therapeutic areas, Virothera holds much promise to deliver new medicines that will benefit a wide range of patients.’
Virothera aims to bring novel gene immune therapeutics to all. Virothera’s technologies regulate protective immunity by new controls to our chemokine system, immune cell conductors recruiting or regulating effective immunity. These are leading to development of novel therapeutics. Its lead candidate is a novel gene based HSV-2 preventative and therapeutic vaccine, followed by an inhibitor of metastatic TN breast cancer, similarly chemokine sensitive.
